Job Overview:
We seek an experienced Communications & Media Director to lead communications efforts across our organization, developing and implementing an ambitious and creative communications strategy to support and amplify our research, advocacy, and constitutional vision. This is a senior role with primary responsibility over external communications, including media outreach, message development, and digital communications. A successful Communications Director will establish internal processes that support communications efforts, lead a productive team, and build the organization’s external profile.
Responsibilities:
- Communications and Branding Strategy: Serve as in-house strategic communications advisor to Court Accountability’s leadership team and establish the organization’s brand and reputation with partners, the Hill, and media. Spearhead communications strategies across traditional and digital platforms to support and amplify the organization’s research and advocacy programs and socialize narratives in support of popular constitutionalism across diverse audiences. Lead strategy and execution for the launch of new branding and products.
- Policy and Advocacy Communications: Lead communications strategy and efforts for Court Accountability’s work on the Hill, including liaising with congressional staff, developing press plans for shadow hearings and other projects, and drafting messaging materials. Lead communications strategy with partner groups where appropriate.
- Earned Media: Maintain a proactive posture with media, cultivate relationships with members of the media, and conduct outreach to press and influencers, including to pitch research stories, pitch the organization’s experts, and generate coverage of the organization’s work. Monitor the Court Accountability and True North press emails and respond to requests and other incoming from members of the media.
- Public Speaking and Media Interaction: Speak with members of the press, both on- and off-record as needed. Serve as a public face for the organization, representing the organization at briefings and events. Provide video commentary and conduct interviews with Hill and movement allies for Court Accountability Action’s webcast with the MeidasTouch network’s Legal AF channel.
- Media Monitoring: Monitor for key developments around issues of constitutional power and the judiciary and suggest ideas for outreach to further advance Court Accountability’s goals and messages.
- Writing and editing: Draft and edit original material for the organization, including press memos, statements, quotes, talking points, prep memos, outlines and questions for panel events, pitches, newsletters, social media posts, and op-eds.
- Management: Serve as a key advisor to Court Accountability’s leadership vis-à-vis developing a growing communications staff and establishing internal processes that support communications efforts. Manage communications personnel and projects and oversee the development of communications materials prepared by other staff and contractors. Liaise with organization staff across all program areas to ensure alignment between communications, messaging, and programmatic priorities.
Qualifications:
- 6+ years of relevant experience, including staff management and on-the-record experience. The ideal candidate will have experience leading communications, including digital communications, for political and/or advocacy organizations. Hill experience is a plus but not required.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Strong familiarity with legacy and new media and digital media platforms.
- Experience coordinating and leading projects across multiple teams and with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong time management and prioritization skills.
- Flexible, able, and willing to respond to fast-breaking developments in real time.
- The ideal candidate will have familiarity with issues such as constitutional law and politics; structural separation of powers; money in politics and corruption; reproductive freedom; and/or administrative law.
- Proactive, solutions-oriented mindset. Eagerness to be a team player and prioritize collaboration and communication over territoriality or ego.
- While this position will be remote, the ideal candidate will be based in Washington, D.C., as this position will require periodic attendance at in-person meetings and events. Occasional travel may be required.

Compensation and Benefits:
Annual salary for this position is $125,000 – $135,000, commensurate with experience.
