The Ranked Choice Voting Resource Center (RCVRC) is a national election policy nonprofit that provides information, research, and tools to teach the public about ranked choice voting (RCV). Our mission is to collect, distribute, and analyze information regarding the adoption, implementation, and impact of ranked-choice voting. Governed by a four-member Board, the Executive Director and staff handle the organization's day-to-day activities.

Position Description

The Director of Finance and Operations will be critical in partnering with the senior leadership team in strategic decision-making and operations as the Election Administration Resource Center continues to enhance its quality programming and build capacity. This is a tremendous opportunity for a finance and operations leader to maximize and strengthen the internal capacity of a well-respected, high-impact organization.

The primary responsibility of this position is to oversee budget and fiscal functions and to assist the Executive Director in administering policies and procedures related to general management functions. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced professional with expertise in fiscal management, accounting, human resource best practices, nonprofit management and governance, and operations management. The candidate must be a self-starter who can work independently and with a team. Flexibility is critical. This is a full-time remote position with in-person meetings and travel needed.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management

  • Analyze and present financial reports accurately and timely; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; collate financial reporting materials for all donor segments; and oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting.
  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process; liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the board of directors; assess any changes necessary.
  • Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the ED; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status.
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.
  • Implement a robust contracts management and financial management/ reporting system; ensure that the contract billing and collection schedule is adhered to and that financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements.
  • Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; improve the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual.
  • Effectively communicate and present critical financial matters to the board of directors.
  • Oversee the compliance program and ensure the organization remains in good standing with all required charitable registration requirements.

Human Resources and Administration

  • Further develop the Election Administration Resource Center’s human resources and administration, enhancing professional development, compensation and benefits, performance evaluation, training, and recruiting.
  • Ensure that recruiting processes are consistent and streamlined.
  • Establish and manage a comprehensive training program to educate employees regarding staff tools, policies, and procedures.
  • Work closely and transparently with all external partners, including third-party vendors and consultants.
  • Oversee administrative functions to ensure efficient and consistent operations as the organization scales.

Job Requirements and Preferred Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; CPA or accounting certification preferred
  • A minimum of two to four years of accounting and operations management experience. Five or more years is preferred.
  • Nonprofit management certification from an accredited university or the ability to procure one within one year of hire
  • The ideal candidate has experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting, and audit coordination for a division or significant program area and has preferably overseen a previous human resources function.
  • Ability to translate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with -- programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds
  • A track record in grants management
  • Proficient in Quickbooks and Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc.), including knowledge of general software programs and the ability to quickly learn other applications such as CRM.
  • Election administration and supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to successfully manage detail and overall plan
  • Excellent interpersonal and active listening skills with the ability to convey critical information clearly and effectively
  • Capable of working with all relevant disciplines and staff located across locations/time zones
  • Self-motivated with the ability to drive projects effectively and promptly.
  • Ability to effectively handle challenging projects in a fast-paced environment
