Rank the Vote, a national non-partisan 501c3 organization founded in 2019 which provides education on ranked choice voting, is looking for a full-time Statewide Organizing Director in North Carolina to work on the front lines of a transformative educational campaign to upgrade North Carolina’s voting system to ranked choice voting (RCV).
Hiring and supervision will be managed by the National Organizing Director at Rank the Vote. The person hired for this role will serve and specifically support Better Ballot North Carolina which is a volunteer, non-partisan grassroots 501c3 organization founded in 2020. The Director will execute a program of capacity growth that will advance RCV in the public arena in North Carolina.
This Director** **will be a part of the team to win RCV in North Carolina by being responsible for increasing visibility and winning support for the RCV movement locally. They will conduct smart and compelling presentations and educational campaigns across digital and in-person mediums to drive volunteer engagement, grow the supporter base, gain endorsements, and develop grassroots fundraising. Working hand-in-hand with our statewide grassroots leaders, the Director will harness tools to help drive success at local events and actions, train activists on organizing techniques, and reach people, fundraising, and endorsement goals to win RCV for North Carolina.
Responsibilities
Ensure the Success of Statewide, Regional, and Local Organizing effort (60%)
With support and direction from RTV-US, you will:
- Build/improve upon a high-functioning hybrid volunteer and staff based grassroots organization focused on executing the RTV-US playbook to advance ranked choice voting in North Carolina.
- Ensure an organization culture that empowers staff and volunteers to take action on behalf of the organization within appropriate messaging, conduct, financial, etc. parameters established by the organization.
- Ensure the organization’s culture fosters and emphasizes face-to-face interaction, mutual respect, appreciation of all forms diversity, in-person meeting, and celebration. This is, among other things, to ensure a strong group identity and sense of relatedness to reinforce commitment to and enjoyment of the hard work of organizing.
- Ensure the organization is maintaining and tracking detailed and accurate metrics related to people, money, and endorsements.
- Build out a network of affiliated high performing regional and municipal chapters, with a reporting structure into the statewide organization. These will be led by a combination of volunteers and staff. Regional chapters will focus on local live outreach, endorsements gathering, fundraising, and volunteer engagement and relationship building.
Development and Program Oversight (10%)
Perform the following with the assistance of an Organizing Director (or Senior Advisor):
- Expand revenue-generating and fundraising activities that support core program operations and North Carolina city/regional expansions, while developing an inspiring culture of philanthropy to carry out the organization’s long-term financial goals.
- Personally make asks of high net worth donors and RCV supporters, especially in the state of North Carolina.
- Oversee and be accountable for all fundraising activities for programs, including design and implementation of annual and long-range plans, development and realization of annual revenue goals, and setting philanthropic priorities.
- Work with the other program and management staff and RTV-US to identify operating and capital needs in order to estimate the extent of fundraising efforts.
- Track and report progress toward revenue and programmatic goals to the Board
- Monitor philanthropy-associated expenses, ensuring proper investment of resources.
- Oversee donor communications and recognition, and align with regional and statewide marketing strategies.
- Direct and coordinate the involvement of leadership, program staff, and consultants with donors and in overall fundraising.
Coalition Building (10%)
- Work with Executive and the Fundraising Team to build and sustain an Advisory Board that supports local, regional and statewide priorities, including identifying and recruiting new members, directing the fundraising knowledge and efforts of the Advisory Board, and overseeing the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual board members, and to ensure giving metrics are achieved.
- Participate directly where appropriate/necessary and provide direction to the directors of the Endorsements and Speakers team and Coalition team (if you have one) to maintain state and national partnerships with other organizations and leaders from across the political, economic and identity spectrum, both non-partisan and partisan, to advance and support the mission of BB-NC.
- Within the non-partisan electoral reform space, maintain complementary positioning of the organization and strong relationships with other leaders. Contribute to continuous improvement of these relationships and the work of these organizations by sharing RTV expertise.
Management (10%)
RTV-US will provide you with substantial assistance and support with these management activities.
- In partnership with other BB-NC management staff (if any) and senior leadership, communicate a shared vision for BB-NC and expectations of each position.
- Establish annual plans, monitor progress and consult/coach on effective strategies and areas for improvement.
- Train and mentor staff on best practices and ensure proper training and professional development as needed.
- Support success of individual staff members through regular communication, guidance and contact.
- Resolve disputes and make decisions to insure efficient, effective and cohesive teams.
- Deliver annual performance assessments for direct reports.
Strategic Visioning (10%)
- Under the strategic direction of the RTV-US and the BB-NC board of directors, design and execute against a long-range strategy supporting BB-NC’s mission, and report to the Board on the timely progress of its chief initiatives.
- Provide leadership in developing program, organizational and financial plans with RTV-US, the BB-NC Board of Directors, and BB-NC staff, and carry out plans and policies.
- Promote active and broad participation by staff and volunteers in all areas of the organization's work.
- Partner with the Organizing Director to maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.
- Communicate regularly with RTV-US, the BB-NC Board of Directors, Advisory Board, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure continued alignment around an organic evolution of BB-NC’s mission and strategy.
The emphasis on these different areas may shift as the organization evolves.
Qualifications
- Experience: 1-6+ years campaign / organizing experience. Experience as Campaign or Organizing Manager for at least one candidate, ideally in North Carolina, preferably in multiple campaign cycles. Volunteer training and management experience for 1-6+ years. Relationship management experience. Rural organizing experience. Direct or indirect lobbying experience for issue(s) a plus. Public speaking experience in front of large crowds of dozens or hundreds of people to inspire them to take action. Graphic and video / creative and production skills, a plus. Excellent copywriting skills. Mastery of social media platforms. Demonstrated, measurable results from past successful campaign and advocacy work. List-building and fundraising experience for issues or candidates is key. Experience with metrics-based capacity growth and goal-setting, and moving volunteers from online to offline direct actions. Portfolio examples of work including videos and presentations, a plus. Excellent public speaking and meeting facilitation skills. Prior grassroots fundraising experience.
- Goal Setting/Achievement: Show planned/achieved goals and tracked metrics/accomplishments in resume.
- Timing: Must be available during evenings and weekends to ensure maximum engagement with volunteers and leaders.
- Tech skills: Preferred experience in campaign platforms such as NationBuilder, NGP VAN/VoteBuilder, MiniVan, OpenVPB, CallHub, Hustle, Relay, GroundGame, EveryAction, GetThru, MobilizeAmerica, Slack, Reach, OutVote, Google Suite, Basecamp, etc. and other web-based campaign software and apps.
- Characteristics: Understanding of your local political landscape within North Carolina, passion for RCV and a commitment to continued learning, drive, vision, obsessive attention to detail, proven leadership, an unwavering positive attitude and good humor, an eagerness to receive feedback and course-correction, adherence to an ethos of non-partisan public relations and messaging, including engagement with individuals from a broad spectrum of political views, and ability to show restraint on expressing personal partisan opinions, exceptional people skills and emotional intelligence, and a passion for election reform.
- Travel: Must be available to travel up to 75% of paid time within North Carolina to assist state volunteers on an in-person basis.
- Residency: Resident of North Carolina, preferred.

Schedule: Full-Time (evenings and weekends required)
Compensation and Contract terms: This is a full-time salaried position at $80,000. Benefits include short term & long term disability, healthcare, 401K and 29 days of PTO/floating holidays.
