The New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB), a nonpartisan, independent agency that enhances the role of New York City residents in elections, seeks a Language Access Manager to expand the accessibility of its educational resources and materials. This new role will act as the lead project manager for the agency’s translation services and processes, working closely with external vendors and internal staff to increase the agency’s language coverage to include all 10 citywide languages (Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Bengali, Haitian Creole, Korean, Arabic, Urdu, French, and Polish) as well as additional translations required under the Voting Rights Act (Hindi and Punjabi).

Reporting to the Associate Director of Production, this role supports translations for a variety of projects, including the official NYC Voter Guide available online at mailed to 5 million voters citywide. They will also provide critical support for a forthcoming campaign to raise awareness of a new law that gives over 800,000 immigrant New Yorkers the right to vote in local elections starting in 2023. They are expected to supervise at least one full-time staff member and external translation service providers. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with strong project management skills who wants to help make local government more accessible and responsive to the needs of immigrant communities in New York City.

This position provides mutually agreed upon flexible work arrangements.


· Propose and implement streamlined processes to manage a high volume of translation requests and projects, including translation management platforms and tools.

· Help identify, onboard, and manage new translation and quality assurance vendors to fulfill expanded language access requirements, working in close collaboration with the Associate Director of Production.

· Hire and manage internal staff, including a Language Access Specialist (Spanish), assisting with prioritization, and helping to determine the best use of internal versus external translation resources.

· Ensure quality, consistency, and continuous improvement of translations, working closely with vendors to manage third-party proofreading, gather and implement staff and partner feedback, and conduct regular project retrospectives.

· With vendors, supervise the creation and maintenance of translation glossaries or style guides for each language we serve, including standardized translations of technical vocabulary.

· Collaborate with internal Partnerships & Outreach team and external advertising campaign vendors to ensure appropriate distribution, consistency, and visibility for translated materials to our target audience of NYC-based speakers.

· Lead or propose internal trainings on relevant topics such as plain language writing and internal project request processes.

· Support the agency’s reporting and research by providing data on translation utilization, volume, and reach.

· Identify best practices and opportunities to embed language access in our processes and planning andserve as a champion for voters with limited English proficiency.

Essential Skills:

· Able to work well under pressure and effectively prioritize tasks to keep team members focused amidst shifting timelines and needs.

· Skillfully synthesizes feedback and edits from multiple stakeholders and ensures that they are executed accurately.

· Reliable and self-directed team member with a strong ability to identify and propose solutions to unexpected obstacles and challenges.

Required Qualifications:

· At least 3 years of related work experience in project management, translation, localization, media, publishing, community engagement, or a related field.

· A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college, or the equivalent combination of education, experience, or certifications.

· Strong preference for an applicant with a lived experience as a member of a multilingual household, organization, or community, and/or in-depth study of language(s) other than English.

· Comfort using software and digital tools for editing and content management.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Past experiencesupervising staff and/or managing budgets in excess of $100,000.

· Experience using computer-assisted translation (CAT) and/or translation management system (TMS) software, such as Trados or Smartling, as well as familiarity with formatting and design software, such as Adobe InDesign and Illustrator.

· Ability to understand and communicate in one or more of the following languages: Arabic, American Sign Language (ASL), Bengali, Cantonese, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Korean, Mandarin, Polish, Punjabi, Russian, or Urdu.

· Direct experience working as a linguist, interpreter, or staff member for a language service provider.

· Interest in and commitment to expanding accessibility and civic engagement for New Yorkers with limited English proficiency, demonstrated by past volunteer or professional experiences.
