We are transforming how civics is taught by providing equity-rooted, real-world civic education, which helps students understand exactly how governments function and how they can make a difference in the system. Through hands-on civic education, legislative advocacy and coalition building, and youth leadership development, we teach young people how to have a voice and become active citizens in their communities.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a skilled and passionate Program Manager to join our diverse and inclusive team. For this position, you will support Generation Citizen’s program by developing relationships with teachers and administrators across California and Washington school districts and providing instructional coaching and support to teachers. The Program Manager will also own special projects associated with developing and executing the West Region Program expansion and growth and Policy & Advocacy.

This position is a part of a local team that includes a Senior Program Director. Collaboration with this colleague is essential to the success of this role. Additionally, opportunities to work closely with colleagues in GC’s sites across the country (New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and New England) and with the National team are typical for strategic planning, organization-wide projects, and day-to-day troubleshooting. This person will report to the Senior Program Director of the West Region.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program (approx. 80%)

  • Manage a caseload of teacher, school, and district relationships in diverse communities, within the framework of GC’s national strategic plan and local strategic priorities.
  • Lead curriculum and pedagogy professional development workshops in collaboration with Local and National staff.
  • Serve as an instructional coach for a set of California and Washington teachers and, as needed, remote national teachers to support them in successfully implementing GC’s curriculum, pedagogy, and equitable civic learning practices.
  • Create and manage semesterly teacher communication and coaching plans in collaboration with the West Region program team.
  • Steward and build strong relationships with district partners with an eye towards progressing multi-year partnerships toward goals and institutionalizing Action Civics within schools and the community.
  • Work with the Director, Measurement & Evaluation to use Salesforce and UpMetrics to track, analyze and report on programmatic data.
  • Contribute to overall site program and quality goals.
  • Coordinate and lead external presentations, workshops, and school-based and citywide end-of-semester Civics Day events in partnership with Senior Program Director.
  • External marketing communications collateral development in partnership with National Communications team

Policy & Advocacy (approx. 15%)

  • Support the West Senior Program Director with the state-based civic learning coalitions when necessary. In order to Cultivate and build powerful relationships with key policymakers and influencers in California in service of our agenda and our coalition partners, supporting local and state-level policy and advocacy efforts to advance equity in civic learning.
  • Support professional development and leadership opportunities to youth in support of student-led policy and advocacy efforts within California.

Development (approx. 5%)

  • Support the West Region’s fundraising strategy by providing a strong programmatic lens when building relationships with funders and supporting grant reporting in partnership with the Senior Program Director.
  • Support and steward a culture of philanthropy in producing media publications and civics research studies, highlighting youth leaders as critical actors and establishing civic education reform as a lever for addressing racial inequality.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • 2+ years of educational programming experience, with a preference for a candidate with classroom and teacher leadership or coaching experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to maintain professionalism with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong presentation skills, capable of effectively communicating complex data and strategies to diverse audiences.
  • Strong time management skills and an ability to stay organized and give attention to details while managing diverse tasks, activities, and projects.
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet software (Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets), familiarity with Google Suite applications, and experience with design tools like Canva.
  • This person should be based in California, able to commute to districts throughout, and have reliable transportation.
  • Ability to adhere to local COVID-19 policies at various sites.

NOTE

This position works primarily remotely but will be expected to travel up to 30% of the time to attend monthly in-person team days, organizational retreats, special events, external partner meetings, conferences, and other potential in-person activities. Required in-person opportunities include, but are not limited to, annual staff retreats, funder meetings, school visits, and region-based Civics Day events. This role may include a limited amount of overnight travel.

SALARY

Generation Citizen is committed to maintaining a compensation and total rewards package that supports our ability to recruit and retain a diverse and talented team. As we make decisions about compensation, we are guided by the following values: clarity, consistency, and internal pay equity. Roles on the National team extend throughout the country causing a wider salary range due to geographic variation versus regional roles that have a set salary.

The salary range for this role is $69,426 to $72,898.
