Position Overview

Forward California is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to join our team as the volunteer Communications and Messaging Coordinator. This leadership position reports directly to the California Co-chairs of the Forward Party. You should expect to be able to allocate up to 8 hours/week in this position.

The Communications and Messaging Lead for Forward California, will spearhead the development and execution of strategic communication initiatives, showcasing our values and policies to diverse audiences. They will play a pivotal role in shaping the party's narrative, fostering media relationships, and driving impactful campaigns to propel Forward California's mission forward.

Key Responsibilities:

This position will lead a remote team of volunteers to assist with the following activities:

  • Strategic Communications:
    • Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies to effectively convey Forward California's values, policies, and achievements.
    • Craft compelling narratives and key messages to resonate with diverse audiences, ensuring consistency across all communication channels.
    • Establish and maintain relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to secure positive coverage.
  • Public Relations:
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries, press releases, and interviews.
    • Proactively identify opportunities for media engagement and manage crisis communications when necessary.
  • Content Creation:
    • Oversee the creation of engaging and shareable content for various platforms, including social media, newsletters, and the party website.
    • Collaborate with designers, writers, and other team members to produce visually appealing and informative materials.
    • Ensure all content adheres to branding guidelines and resonates with the target audience.
  • Social Media Management:
    • Develop and implement a social media strategy to enhance the party's online presence and engagement.
    • Monitor social media trends, analyze metrics, and adjust strategies accordingly.
    • Foster community-building through interactive and meaningful online conversations.
  • Marketing Campaigns:
    • Plan and execute campaigns to promote party initiatives, events, and membership drives.
    • Utilize data-driven insights to refine messaging strategies and maximize outreach.
  • Strategic Planning:
    • Contribute to the development of the party's long-term strategic plans, ensuring that communications and messaging objectives are aligned with broader organizational goals.
    • Participate in strategic discussions to shape the party's overall vision and direction.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of a formal degree.
  • Proven experience in communications, public relations, and messaging, with a focus on political or advocacy-related work.
  • Strong understanding of California's political landscape and key issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively to reach diverse audiences.
  • Experience with social media management and analytics tools.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
