Grassroots Organizer (Contractor Role)


Rank MI Vote, a statewide organization that advocates for ranked choice voting, is looking for a part-time contracted organizer to work on the front lines of a transformative grassroots movement to upgrade Michigan’s voting system to ranked choice voting (RCV).

Hiring and supervision will be managed by Rank MI Vote which is a non-partisan, 501c4 grassroots organization founded by volunteer activists advocating for RCV adoption locally and across our state who recently won a ballot question in Ann Arbor by 73%. Rank MI Vote is a sustainable all-volunteer organization. The Organizer will be the first contractor. The Organizer will execute a program of capacity growth that will advance RCV in the public arena in Michigan using a three-pronged simultaneous approach in the short-term, including:

  • RCV advocacy, volunteer engagement and ballot initiatives in multiple priority municipalities,
  • Take Statewide fundraising to a significantly new level
  • Increase state legislature advocacy

This Organizer** **will be a part of the team to win RCV by being responsible for increasing visibility for the RCV movement locally in target cities. They will drive volunteer engagement, grow the supporter base, gain endorsements, and develop/execute grassroots fundraising. Working hand-in-hand with our statewide volunteer grassroots leaders, the Organizer will harness tools to help drive success at local events and actions, train activists on organizing techniques, and reach people, fundraising, and endorsement goals to eventually win RCV for Michigan.

Contractor Projects and Responsibilities

  • Guidance: Role would take guidance directly from the President of RankMIVote. Expect to coordinate/communicate most days with the RMV leadership especially in the areas of Fundraising, Volunteer Engagement and Communication. Would focus on executing tasks to achieve Strategy/Goals, Projects Outcomes, and execution plans.
  • Fundraising: Assess RMV fundraising plan and identify opportunities for growth. Execute aspects of the fundraising plan, including running phonebanks to dial for dollars/calltime, applying for grants, and writing fundraising emails. Provide weekly progress updates.
  • Volunteer Management: Develop repeatable, trainable workflows to boost online engagement so as to drive turnout for events. Communicate status updates and action items to local RCV supporters. Implement a system for recruitment and training of volunteers.
  • Field Campaign Support: Work with the statewide organizing team to establish priorities then meet weekly goals for tracking growth in people, money and endorsements. Manage, develop and support a field team to grow the supporter, volunteer and donor base. Canvass, phone bank and text bank weekly hitting weekly target goals to grow people and money lists.


  • Desired Experience:
    • 1-5+ years campaign and/or organizing experience.
    • 1-5+ years volunteer training and management experience.
    • Demonstrated, measurable results from past successful campaign and advocacy work.
    • List-building and fundraising experience for issues or candidates is a plus.
    • Experience with metrics-based capacity growth and goal-setting and moving volunteers from online to offline direct actions.
    • Excellent public speaking and meeting facilitation skills.
    • Prior grassroots fundraising experience.
  • Timing: Must be available on evenings and weekends to ensure maximum engagement with volunteers and leaders for the full length of campaign.
  • Tech skills: Competence in EveryAction, NGP VAN/VoteBuilder, Slack, Google Suite, and OpenVPB is Preferred. Experience with other web-based project management and collaboration platforms is helpful.
  • Characteristics: Understanding of your local political landscape within Michigan, passion for RCV and a commitment to continued learning, drive, vision, attention to detail, proven leadership, an unwavering positive attitude and good humor, an eagerness to receive feedback and course-correction, adherence to an ethos of non-partisan public relations and messaging, including engagement with individuals from a broad spectrum of political views, and ability to show restraint on expressing personal partisan opinions, exceptional people skills and emotional intelligence, and a passion for election reform.
  • Travel: May include up to 50% travel during campaign execution periods, including standard mileage reimbursements, as public health conditions allow.
  • Residency: Resident of Michigan strongly preferred.

Schedule Part-Time, anticipated approximately 20 hours a week, with no less than 10 hours a week excluding PTO

Compensation Commensurate with experience, $2000-2500/month, through November 2022.
