Travel: Some in-state overnight travel may be required

Reports To: Executive Director

Better Boundaries’ Political Director leads the organization’s electoral strategy with a focus on delivering an independent redistricting process and voter-centric redistricting standards for all Utahns. Tasked with envisioning and implementing our electoral strategy, the Political Director partners with nonprofit coalition members, current and prospective elected officials, and dedicated volunteers.

Additionally, the Political Director works directly with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to support:

  1. Litigation against Utah’s gerrymandered congressional maps and illegal repeal of Prop 4. This includes fundraising and communication support.
  2. Protection of Utah’s excellent voting laws,right to the ballot initiative,and forwarding good-government reforms.
  3. Robust, frequent, and targeted messaging and communications among our audiences - Utahns, donors, partners, and more.
  4. Best practices in our organization including good governance, fiscal health and transparency, and issue knowledge and information.

The Political Director splits time between rapid response and short-term tasks and implementing a long-term strategy. Responsibilities and tasks include:

  • Create and execute our electoral strategy, in partnership with the executive director, board of directors and others.
  • Build and sustain relationships with partners, including current and prospective elected officials.
  • Support communication efforts, including social media oversight, email content, audience growth and management, and public speaking.
  • Support fundraising efforts, as needed.
  • Manage volunteers, including summer interns, and grow volunteer engagement
  • Provide in-kind support to the Better Boundaries Accountability PAC, including candidate recruitment and research, and provide strategic and financial support to identified candidates.
  • Work with Better Boundaries consultants to protect the Independent RedistrictingCommission and the initiative process in Utah, especially through legislative relationships and grassroots support.
  • Develop and execute strategic initiatives to build a more geographically and politically diverse base of support for the organization and the issue of independent redistricting.
  • Assist the Executive Director in rapid response efforts, especially related todevelopments in the litigation on Utah’s gerrymandered congressional maps.

Requisite Skills and Qualifications:

  • Passion for good-government and ethics reforms, including redistricting reform.
  • Proven organizing experience with politically active nonprofit or politicalcampaigns.
  • Ability to work independently, self-motivate, and self-direct.
  • Experience in developing strategic or campaign-related plans.
  • Superb relationship building skills.
  • Creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Outstanding organization and leadership abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and tasks.
  • Demonstrated capacity to motivate volunteers.
